Vision and Health at Work

Prevent Blindness America (PBA) has set aside the month of March as Workplace Vision Wellness Month. The goal of this initiative is to teach corporations and their employees about the relevance of vision wellness, including advice on how to avoid vision-threatening eye accidents.

Every day, people sustain workplace related eye injuries that need the attention of an eye care professional or doctor. Workplace safety experts and doctors believe the two most common reasons that people get eye injuries is either because they don't use anything to shield their eyes or they are using the wrong form of eye protection.

Typical Eye Injuries

Most commonly, eye injuries that take place in the workplace are a result of flying particles or falling objects such as building or craft materials that can enter or scratch the eye. Chemical splashes, gases and flames can also scorch and seriously injure the sensitive eyes.

An eye care professional is trained to help you evaluate potential eye dangers at work and judge the optimal kind of eye safety for you.

Sometimes workplaces possess multiple risks for eyes and finding the best eye protection should take all potential risks into consideration.
If you work with chemicals you should wear goggles, while if you work in a place where you encounter flying objects or dust, pick safety glasses that have shields along the sides too.
Working close to hazardous radiation when welding, working with lasers, or fiber optics calls for the use of special-purpose safety glasses, goggles, face shields, or helmets made especially for this sort of work.

In addition try to maintain the brightness of your screen to a comfortable resolution and place your monitor right under eye level to reduce any pressure on your eyes. You should also consider the option of computer glasses.
